This course is a comprehensive and practical study of the design of wastewater, water distribution and sludge pumping systems. Guidance is provided for the planning and design of pump stations. Methods and procedures are given for determining pump configuration and selection, discharge system size, and sump dimensions. Pump house features are identified and construction and maintenance considerations are addressed.

An example of pumping station design will be conducted under the instructor’s supervision.
The objective of this course is to enhance the hydraulic design capabilities for a variety of engineers, technicians and technologists with different engineering backgrounds.
Who Should Attend
Engineers, technologists and others interested in the hydraulic design of pumping stations. This includes design engineers, pumping plant superintendents and operators, water resource engineers, wastewater utility managers, city and town engineers, consulting engineers, project managers, environmental engineers, collection system maintenance engineers, managers of technical services, technicians and technologists, approval agency plan reviewers and other individuals involved with hydraulic pumping stations design.

Though some discussion relates to other engineering disciplines and responsibilities, the information is basic and intended only to enhance the hydraulic designer’s ability to accommodate other needs and communicate with designers from other disciplines

Ian Buchanan

Ian Buchanan B.Eng., M.Eng., Ph.D. Ian Buchanan has a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering, a M.Eng. (thesis-based) in Environmental Engineering, a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from McGill University, and is a registered professional engineer in the province of Alberta (APEGGA). He is an experienced academic and researcher, whose work as an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta in the areas of industrial and municipal wastewater treatment process development, modeling, and optimization has led to two book chapters and over 60 peer reviewed journal articles, conference papers, conference presentations, and engineering reports.

Dr. Buchanan has led more than 15 projects funded by industry, research organizations, and government departments. He has taught undergraduate courses in municipal systems engineering, environmental impact assessment, environmental protection, environmental engineering fundamentals, probability and statistics for engineers, and chemical and physical treatment processes. Graduate level courses include industrial wastewater management, biological waste-treatment processes, physical-chemical water and wastewater treatment, and environmental engineering measurements.
