Description
 
Chemical process plants nowadays have become complicated because of the huge demand of various petroleum, chemical, and pharmaceutical products. The industrial processes have become more dangerous with the increased use of hazardous materials, high pressure processes, toxic gases, complicated chemical reactions etc. Concerns have grown to estimate and quantify risk of major chemical accidents.Systematically identifying major hazards arising from the complex and the dangerous process plant and the assessment of their likelihood and severity are the key steps to establish which parts of the plant need special attention.
This course covers the main theme of Industrial Safety & Health, which includes: basic safety definitions, loss causation model, role of management, safety legislations, accident investigation, risk assessment, risk management, safety control, inherent safety, scope and foundations, environment and health, and workplace health.
 
Objective
 
This course is an introduction to concepts and techniques of ‘Industrial Safety &Health” applied to prevent and mitigate accidents and associated losses in industrial aspects as well as the aspect of occupational health & safety. Accidents happened in the industries are preventable and not immitigable.Our central problem is not to address safety features properly and as well as not following proper procedures at workplace during operation and maintenance. The objective of this course is to learn different concepts of ‘Industrial Safety & Health” and how to apply those in real application to prevent and mitigate accidents and minimize losses associated with people, property, process and environment.
 
Learning Outcomes
  • Learn the ability to practice safety management in industrial workplaces and also in daily life.
  • Understand loss prevention and loss management techniques (foundational knowledge).
  • Think critically, creatively, and practically to achieve optimal risk analysis, risk assessment, and risk controls (application learning).
  • Students would be able to develop a sense of responsibility to save others’ lives; “due diligence” (caring).
  • At the end of the course students would be capable to analyze data and then would be able to utilize required data in safety and risk management application.
  • Students would be able to deal hazards with proper safety management tools.
  • At the end of the course students would be able to communicate and educate employees to ensure the development of a safety culture within a particular workplace.
  • Students will learn scope and foundations in environment and health.

The PDDP Distance Education program works as follows:

  • Once you register for this course, you will be sent a login username and password for our online distance website.

  • You will receive the course notes in hard copy through the online website, you will receive a set of notes each week covering the course material.

  • A one hour video-conference session will be conducted by your instructor each week (if required). The objective of this session is to assist in solving the assignments, as well as answer student questions that should be sent to instructor early enough prior to the meeting time. In addition with being able to communicate with the instructor, you will also be able to communicate with other students in the same class and watch their questions being answered as well. (A high speed internet connection is strongly recommended for this feature).

  • Each set of exercises can be completed and submitted by the indicated date and your completed exercise will be marked online and and returned by your instructor.

  • To gain the most from your course, it is highly recommended that you participate fully in all discussions and exercises. Please remember that each course has a form of quiz or exercise at the end to test your understanding of the material. You will be informed of these dates when you receive the course schedule.

Md Nur Hossain

Md Nur Hossain was born in Chittagong, Bangladesh, in 1979. He received the B.Sc. degree in Mechanical engineering with a distinction of 1st Class Second Position from Khulna University of
Engineering & Technology, Bangladesh, in 2003. In the same year, he joined as ‘Process Engineer/ Technical Support Executive’ in a Steel Processing Plant of Abul Khair Group, Chittagong, Bangladesh. In 2004. Mr. Hossain joined in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology, as a Lecturer, and in 2007 became Assistant Professor.
He completed his M.A.Sc in Civil Engineering in 2010 from Dalhousie University, Canada. His research during M.A.Sc was an automotive research and development program focusing on issues
relating to the automobile in the 21st century (an Auto 21 research project), which covered ‘Fatigue & Fracture Mechanics of Materials’ and ‘Finite Element Analysis. In 2011, he started his PhD at
Dalhousie University in the Department of Process Engineering & Applied Science in a NSERC Strategic Research Project on “An Inherently Safer Approach to Dust Explosion Risk Reduction”
focusing ‘Risk Assessment’ & ‘Risk Control’.

 Strong background in dust explosion analysis for laboratory scale and industrial application.
 Expert in Monte-Carlo simulation, Dust Explosion Simulation Code (DESC)

presentation.
