Description
 
This course will introduce topics that are becoming important to engineers of all backgrounds, as pollution prevention and corporate sustainability are the responsibility of everyone at a workplace. Pollution prevention will focus of the hierarchy of waste prevention, and the differences between product and process P2 initiatives. The course will go over the process of putting together a P2 program at any facility. The concept of considering simple payback periods for project implementation will also be discussed. Corporate sustainability reporting will discuss how companies can work towards mitigating environmental impacts and implementing sustainable practices.
 
Objective
 
Upon completion of this course the participant will have gained an understanding of pollution prevention (P2) programs and initiatives. The participant will be knowledgeable in the steps involved to put together and carry out a P2 program. The participant will be able to carry out simple payback period calculations. The participant will have an understanding of corporate sustainability reporting as well as voluntary initiatives and eco-labelling.
 
Target Audience
 
The target audience for this course are engineers of any background, working or newly graduated. Non-engineers looking to gain knowledge of pollution prevention (P2) and corporate sustainability reporting can also benefit from this course.

The PDDP Distance Education program works as follows:

  • Once you register for this course, you will be sent a login username and password for our online distance website.

  • You will receive the course notes in hard copy through the online website, you will receive a set of notes each week covering the course material.

  • A one hour video-conference session will be conducted by your instructor each week (if required). The objective of this session is to assist in solving the assignments, as well as answer student questions that should be sent to instructor early enough prior to the meeting time. In addition with being able to communicate with the instructor, you will also be able to communicate with other students in the same class and watch their questions being answered as well. (A high speed internet connection is strongly recommended for this feature).

  • Each set of exercises can be completed and submitted by the indicated date and your completed exercise will be marked online and and returned by your instructor.

  • To gain the most from your course, it is highly recommended that you participate fully in all discussions and exercises. Please remember that each course has a form of quiz or exercise at the end to test your understanding of the material. You will be informed of these dates when you receive the course schedule.

Dr. Lindsay Miller-Branovacki

My name is Dr. Lindsay Miller – Branovacki. I have a Masters degree in Civil Engineering and a Doctoral degree in Environmental Engineering. I am also registered with Professional Engineers Ontario. I have taught a wide range of courses at the undergraduate and graduate level at the University of Windsor, Ontario. I have worked as an environmental engineer for Chrysler Canada Research and Development. My main research interests include air quality, health effects, sustainability and life cycle analysis. I have worked on collaborative projects with Health Canada, Union Gas, AUTO21 and Woodbridge Automotive. I have published in several academic journals and have presented at international conferences on diverse topics.
