The participant of this seminar will have an overview of the codes and standards governing the design of pressure retaining components and the piping design process. By the end of the seminar, the participant will understand pipe sizing for various flow conditions and pipe wall thickness calculation for internal pressure. Flow and pressure drop calculation; allowable stress and basic piping stress analysis, loading on piping system. Various components that make up a piping system. Good piping design and layout practices. All topics are introduced to individuals with no or limited background on the subject.


This course will provide the participants with the knowledge on the fundamentals of the design of piping systems. The course will also include topics on maintenance, inspection and operation of a piping system.

The course will start with a discussion on the codes that governs the design of Pressure piping, the Hierarchy of Provincial Act and Regulations and various standards that is applicable to different industries.
Design topics will include pipe sizing, pipe wall thickness calculation for internal pressure, flow and pressure drop calculation, the concept of allowable stresses, various loadings on a piping system and the basic of piping stress analysis. Hands on examples will be used to demonstrate various flow and stress calculations. Good piping layout practices will be discussed in detail. A recommended piping design process to ensure a successful outcome will be presented.

Additional subjects such as piping maintenance, piping inspection methods and piping failure case studies will be included in this course.
By the end of the course, the participant will have the basic knowledge and the tools to design and layout a functional piping system from start to finish. Each individual will also gain an insight in the troubleshooting, operation and maintenance of piping systems.

Design and project engineers and technologists, plant and facility engineers, consultants, mechanical engineers and technologists, maintenance and operation personnel and other technical personnel who need to upgrade/refresh their current knowledge of piping systems for process plants.

Gee Sham

Gee Sham P.Eng. Senior Engineer with former Bechtel International, former Ontario Hydro and various consulting companies, bringing with him in the area of piping design, layout, analysis and operation for Process and Power plants.

He has provided expertise as a consultant and acted as lead design engineer in mining, food processing, petro-chemical and power plants in Canadian and International projects. In addition to the design and construction phase of the project, he was also the project lead in system commissioning and plant start-up activities.

Gee Sham also has many years of experience in operation and maintenance of process and power plants. The main areas include system performance improvement and leading multi-discipline teams to perform troubleshooting, root cause analysis and failure analysis. In addition, he has work as a project engineer to execute design and modification in Mechanical and Instrumental and Control projects.

As an active instructor in this field, he has been involved in industrial training for over 25 years. He has taught courses in technical colleges, in-house training for consulting companies and offered lectures in various technical training institutions. Students from across Canada and overseas have participated in these courses and have provided very positive feedback.
