Description
Municipal and industrial wastewater has received considerable attention of research and engineering, since it touches the daily life of all populations. Securing a safe, reliable source of potable water is an ever growing challenge for governmental and professional agencies, where daily demand is growing and yet more complex issues are evolving with the daily use of more chemicals and materials. It is important for people involved in water business to get first hand understanding of the complex issues related to water and wastewater. Recently, with the extensive consumption of pharmaceutical drugs and excessive usage of electronic gadgets, more risks are posed to the environment and water supplies. It is the duty of everyone involved to ensure that the public at large are receiving healthy water for daily use. That comes from the fundamental understanding of processes and technology used in water and wastewater treatment.
 
Objective
The course takes a step-by-step approach to analyze and understand the issues related to water and wastewater treatment. We start with a review of aquatic chemistry, understanding the basic terminology used in the industry and gradually introducing more topics that are essential for every participant to understand and use. Federal and provincial regulations will also be reviewed. As well, we shall be using examples and practice drawings from industry. Participants are also encouraged to bring examples from their own fields to get acquainted with each other.

Topics covered include physical, chemical and biological treatment. Once the participants feel they have gained the knowledge needed, we will be covering sophisticated technologies, such as ultrasonic and supercritical fluid technologies. We will also touch base on integration of renewable energy resources in water works. Sufficient reading materials and hand-outs will be distributed for both course taking and future reference.

Target Audience
This course is designed for people involved in water and wastewater business. Engineers, technologists, plant operators, municipal officers, government agencies and others are encouraged to attend. It is also suitable for people involved in budgeting and procurement, waste management and bottling industry. No previous experience in the industry is needed. We will start with basic topics and ensure everyone is actively participating and has benefited from the topics presented. The participants will be given the chance to interact with each other, since spreading knowledge is a theme of the course.

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Gain a fundamental understanding of aquatic chemistry and testing
  • Familiarize themselves with the engineering and technology of water treatment and recycle
  • Have better understanding of provincial and governmental regulations and guidelines for water systems
  • Be able to draw conclusions on available treatment methods and help in making proper decisions in design and operation

Ian Buchanan

Ian Buchanan B.Eng., M.Eng., Ph.D. Ian Buchanan has a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering, a M.Eng. (thesis-based) in Environmental Engineering, a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from McGill University, and is a registered professional engineer in the province of Alberta (APEGGA). He is an experienced academic and researcher, whose work as an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta in the areas of industrial and municipal wastewater treatment process development, modeling, and optimization has led to two book chapters and over 60 peer reviewed journal articles, conference papers, conference presentations, and engineering reports.

Dr. Buchanan has led more than 15 projects funded by industry, research organizations, and government departments. He has taught undergraduate courses in municipal systems engineering, environmental impact assessment, environmental protection, environmental engineering fundamentals, probability and statistics for engineers, and chemical and physical treatment processes. Graduate level courses include industrial wastewater management, biological waste-treatment processes, physical-chemical water and wastewater treatment, and environmental engineering measurements.
