Description
Pavements are one of the main components of our transportation and infrastructure systems. By daily expansion of our ground transportation systems and higher costs of construction, maintenance and rehabilitations of pavements, highway agencies are facing challenges to keep serviceability of their pavements to an acceptable level. During the last two decades, the issue of proper design, high quality construction as well as optimum maintenance and rehabilitation of pavements have been the focus of highway agencies, contractors, consulting engineers, and researchers. With the relatively large investment involved in pavements, even marginal improvement in managing this investment, and in the technology involved, may effect very large absolute dollar saving. In addition to direct saving in capital costs and maintenance, the indirect benefits to the road users can be equally significant.
Objective
The main objective of this workshop is to provide participants with a thorough understanding of important factors in pavement design, maintenance and rehabilitation. The focus will be on practices of pavement design and maintenance used by Canadian highway agencies.
Target Audience
The workshop is intended for pavement owners/users, consulting engineers, contractors and engineering technologists. A basic background of pavement engineering is required. This course is an excellent opportunity for those wishing to develop their knowledge on pavement design, maintenance and rehabilitation.

Day I
- Introduction to Pavement Design
- Importance of pavements
- Types of pavements (flexible, rigid, and composite)
- Important factors in pavement design
- Traffic calculation for pavement design
- Material characterization for pavement design
- Environmental considerations for pavement design
- AASHTO pavement design method
- Asphalt Institute pavement design procedure
- Stage construction
- Computer programs for pavement design and analysis
Day II
- Pavement Maintenance and Rehabilitation
- Importance of pavement maintenance and rehabilitation
- Differences between pavement maintenance and rehabilitation
- Pavement maintenance and rehabilitation methods
- Surface treatments
- Crack filling and sealing
- Different pavement sealing methods (fog seal, chip seal, slurry seal, and micro surfacing)
- Rehabilitation methods
- Overlay
- Mill/inlay
- Asphalt paving recycling
- Important factors in selection of M/R methods
- Life Cycle Cost Analysis
Upon completion of the workshop participant will be able to:
- Explain the importance of pavement and various pavement types.
- Identify important factors in pavement performance.
- Calculate traffic loads, consider environmental factors, and characterize materials for pavement design.
- Design a typical new construction pavement design based on AASHTO 1993 method.
- Learn important factors in selection of various pavement maintenance and rehabilitation methods.
- Design an overlay pavement design.

Instructor
Hamid R. Soleymani, Ph.D., P.Eng.
Hamid R. Soleymani has a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Civil Engineering and Transportation Engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology and a Ph.D. from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. After graduating, he worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the North Central Superpave Center at Purdue University (USA) for three years. Dr. Soleymani was a faculty member at the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta from 2000 to 2006 and as the Director of Transportation Research Centre since 2010-2013. He taught civil engineering materials, transportation, and pavement management systems at the graduate and undergraduate levels for several years and conducted several research studies in highways and transportation areas.
He worked with EBA Engineering Consultants as a senior pavements and materials engineer from 2006 to 2010. During this time, he completed many pavement preservation and materials projects and also conducted numerous research studies for Alberta Transportation and other highway agencies. Recently he joined the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure as a senior Pavements and Materials Engineer.
Dr. Soleymani has over 15 years of academic and industrial experience in the areas of pavement management, design and materials and is a registered professional engineer. He has published more than 30 papers in technical journals and conferences. His expertise and research interest areas include: asphalt and Portland cement concrete; Superpave mix design; pavement design, maintenance and rehabilitation; materials characterization and modeling; pavement performance evaluation; mechanistic pavement design; and pavement management systems.
