Description
This course covers various design and performance aspects of industrial and commercial steam systems with particular focus on some of the major opportunities available to improve their energy efficiency and productivity. This includes calculation procedures required to determine the savings opportunities. Instructions are provided for depicting individual steam systems with procedures to estimate the fuel costs and operating characteristics of a facility along with identifying improvements in energy efficiency that translate to operational cost savings.

Objective

This program is designed for end users at the energy manager, steam systems supervisor, engineer, and operations level who have steam systems responsibilities in industrial and institutional plants, as well as those who are involved in design or evaluation of steam systems, or who wish to understand more about energy and productivity savings in the steam systems. The attendees will learn the principles that underpin and foster best practices in using steam power, and by the program’s end they will not only have a range of tips, tools, and practices to take away with them, but also an action plan for integration into their daily routine.

Instructor
Dr. Birbal Singh, Ph.D., P.Eng.
Birbal is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Lakehead University since 1987 (25 years). He teaches courses in applied heat transfer, applied thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and project management.

Birbal has performed research for seven years in the area of enhanced heavy oil recovery using steam injection, and thermal recovery of oil and bitumen from oil sands at Alberta Research Council. He has received awards from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) in 2012, from American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) in 2008, from Ontario Natural Gas Association in 1994, from Lakehead University in 1992, and Certificates of Appreciation from American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in 1990, and Society for Manufacturing Engineers (SME) in 1994. He was appointed to the Board of Directors of Innovation Ontario Corporation by the Premier of Ontario in 1992 and reappointed in 1995.

Birbal is registered with Professional Engineer of Ontario (PEO), and member of American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). He received his B. Tech. (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering with First Class Standing from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, M.S. from University of Missouri, and Ph.D. from the University of Alberta.
