Description
Many of the contaminants in an industrial wastewater are actually raw materials lost from production processes whose recovery would increase process efficiency and reduce wastewater treatment costs. Therefore, a thorough understanding of production processes and the sources of contaminants in wastewater is needed, as is knowledge of the waste characteristics and treatment options. This course begins with a review of the characterization of dissolved and particulate components of industrial wastewaters and an overview of wastewater management and treatment options. We’ll then look at wastewater audits as a means of identifying the sources of contaminants and of quantifying the various components in an industrial wastewater. The concept of an environmental management system will then be examined, as will the legislative and regulatory framework within which industry operates. The theoretical and practical aspects of the design and operation of various treatment processes will be reviewed before we move on to study how these methods are applied in various industrial sectors.
Objectives
This two-day course focuses on wastewater management and treatment practices appropriate for industrial wastewaters. The course will cover industrial water quality descriptors; current industrial wastewater management practices; a review of environmental legislation; pretreatment and treatment design theory and practice; and an overview of waste sources, waste minimization opportunities, and waste stream management and treatment in selected industrial sectors.
Target Audience
This course is designed to be accessible to all those involved in the environmental protection aspects of industry; this includes (but is not limited to) environmental protection officers, wastewater treatment operators, engineers, technologists, managers, and representatives of government agencies.

In addition to an overview of the challenges involved in industrial wastewater management and treatment, industrial sectors will be profiled to highlight the sources and characteristics of the wastes produced and their management and treatment options.

Instructor
Ian Buchanan has a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering, a M.Eng. (thesis-based) in Environmental Engineering, a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from McGill University, and is a registered professional engineer in the province of Alberta (APEGGA). He is an experienced academic and researcher, whose work as an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta in the areas of industrial and municipal wastewater treatment process development, modeling, and optimization has led to two book chapters and over 60 peer reviewed journal articles, conference papers, conference presentations, and engineering reports.
Dr. Buchanan has led more than 15 projects funded by industry, research organizations, and government departments. He has taught undergraduate courses in municipal systems engineering, environmental impact assessment, environmental protection, environmental engineering fundamentals, probability and statistics for engineers, and chemical and physical treatment processes. Graduate level courses include industrial wastewater management, biological waste-treatment processes, physical-chemical water and wastewater treatment, and environmental engineering measurements.
