Description

This 2-day course will cover the fundamentals of acoustics and noise control. Topics include:
  • Basic acoustics, terminology, measurement metrics, physiology
  • Analysis of sounds, energy equivalent sound level, measurement techniques, FFT, octave & 1/3 octave band frequency analysis
  • Sound sources such as machines, roads, pipelines
  • Environmental noise, sound propagation outdoors, assessment criteria, noise modeling software
  • Architectural acoustics, sound absorption, sound transmission, assessment criteria
  • Noise control methods such as barriers, enclosures, vibration isolation
  • HVAC acoustics and noise control methods
  • Occupational noise issues

Objective
The objective of the course will be to learn the fundamentals of acoustics, the terminology and metrics used to quantify and assess noise and to gain a further understanding of how Engineers deal with acoustical issues for environmental noise and noise control inside buildings. Questions are welcome and encouraged to stimulate interest and dialog.


Target Audience
Engineers, Architects, Technologists, Health and Safety officers, environmental scientists, Oil and Gas practitioners, and anyone else who has encountered noise issues as part of their work.

Special Features
There will be demonstrations of various acoustical measurement equipment and software.  In particular, sound level meters, vibration monitors, environmental noise modeling and assessment software as well as other audio and visual demonstrations.  Full printed course notes will be provided.

After Attending This Course You Will Be Able To:

  • Understand the basic terminology and metrics used to quantify and assess noise
  • Perform basic acoustic calculations such as addition of noise sources, distance attenuation, room acoustic parameters
  • Read an environmental noise impact assessment report and understand the terminology and methods
  • Understand acoustical criteria and ratings associated with architectural specifications
  • Understand the importance of hearing conservation and methods to reduce hearing loss for workers
Instructor
Steven Bilawchuk, M.Sc., P.Eng., is an Engineer and principal partner with ACI Acoustical Consultants Inc., an Edmonton based Engineering Consulting company that specializes in noise and vibration. Mr. Bilawchuk specializes in environmental noise impact assessments for oil and gas projects, utilities such as pipelines, and municipal transportation projects such as roadways and LRT. Mr. Bilawchuk also works on architectural acoustics projects.

Mr. Bilawchuk has conducted numerous 1 and 2 day courses on acoustics and noise control for industry, government, and educational institutions.  In addition to his work with ACI, Mr. Bilawchuk is a sessional instructor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Alberta, teaching a course on Acoustics and Noise Control (MecE 553).
